Working Together to Protect Workplaces from the Opioid Crisis

Opioid misuse is getting slightly out of hand. It is affecting entire teams, operations, and communities. Challenging safety, productivity, and compassion. We cannot combat this issue by ourselves. Let’s look at how local services and community partnerships, alongside Fastest Labs of Meridian, are helping turn the tide.

Building Local Connections

Idaho’s State Opioid Response program is expanding access to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), increasing naloxone distribution, and strengthening prevention efforts statewide (Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, n.d.-a). These initiatives bring together behavioral health providers, public safety agencies, and community organizations so that people have options for care and recovery before a crisis becomes tragic.

In the Oregon-Idaho High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), public health and public safety agencies have identified collaborative strategies such as overdose data sharing, targeted naloxone programs, and overdose response task forces to improve outcomes (Myers et al., 2023).

Tapping into these existing networks means quicker access to help when an employee or family member needs it.

Resources That Support Employees and Families

Southeastern Idaho Public Health’s opioid and substance use disorder resource guide lists resources that employers can share with their teams. From where to get free naloxone to treatment and recovery programs across the state (Southeastern Idaho Public Health, 2022).

Idaho’s network includes:

  • Crisis centers and hotlines for immediate support.

  • MOUD clinics providing evidence-based treatment in multiple Idaho communities.

  • Drug take-back locations to safely dispose of unused prescriptions.

  • Peer and recovery support groups for ongoing encouragement.

Having this information ready means leaders can act quickly and confidently to connect someone with the right level of help.
