DOT Post-Accident Testing in Fresno

Meet DOT Deadlines With In-Lab & Mobile Testing in Fresno

When a qualifying accident occurs, employers have little time to coordinate collectors, document their response, and complete required testing. Fastest Labs of North Fresno provides in-lab testing in Fresno and on-site mobile collection to help employers meet time-sensitive Department of Transportation testing requirements.

Backed by more than a decade of industry experience, our certified collectors follow confidential procedures in a clean, inviting facility. We aim to keep wait times under five minutes, and most Department of Transportation drug test results are available within one to two days, depending on laboratory review requirements.

Contact us at (559) 608-4813 as soon as a qualifying accident occurs so we can coordinate the required testing.

Post-Accident Support Beyond Specimen Collection

A reliable post-accident response starts before an accident happens. We help employers establish testing locations, responsible contacts, regulatory deadlines, and recordkeeping procedures in advance.

Our post-accident services include:

  • In-lab collection: Certified collectors conduct testing at our Fresno facility according to federally mandated procedures.
  • On-site mobile testing: Our mobile collectors provide another option when sending a driver to the lab isn’t practical.
  • Policy creation: We assist with developing and implementing workplace drug and alcohol policies.
  • Program management: We coordinate ongoing compliance needs, including participation in a DOT consortium when applicable.
  • Medical Review Officer services: A licensed physician reviews laboratory findings, interprets results, and manages disputes.
  • Audit preparation: We help employers organize program records and prepare for compliance reviews.

These services give the designated employer representative, often called the DER, a clear response plan. The DER is the company official authorized to receive results, coordinate testing, and take required action involving a safety-sensitive employee.

When FMCSA Post-Accident Testing Is Required

Under 49 CFR Part 382.303, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration post-accident testing rules apply to qualifying accidents involving drivers of commercial motor vehicles that require a commercial driver’s license. Covered vehicles generally include certain trucks over 26,000 pounds, vehicles transporting hazardous materials that require placarding, and vehicles designed to transport 16 or more people, including the driver.

Testing is generally required when an accident involves:

  • A human fatality: Each surviving covered driver must be tested, regardless of whether a moving violation citation is issued.
  • A citation and injury: The commercial driver receives a qualifying moving violation citation, and someone requires immediate medical treatment away from the scene.
  • A citation and tow-away: The commercial driver receives a qualifying moving violation citation, and disabling damage requires a vehicle to be transported from the scene.

For a nonfatal accident involving injury or towing, the testing requirement generally isn’t triggered if the covered driver doesn’t receive a qualifying citation. Employers should document the facts behind their decision rather than relying only on the severity of the damage.

Deadlines for Alcohol & Drug Testing

The regulatory clock begins at the time of the accident. Necessary medical care comes first, but the driver must remain available while the employer coordinates testing.

Employers must track these federal time limits:

  • Alcohol testing: Attempt the breath alcohol test within two hours. If testing hasn’t occurred by then, document the reason for the delay and continue trying until eight hours after the accident. At eight hours, stop and record why the test wasn’t completed.
  • Drug testing: Complete the required urinalysis drug screen within 32 hours. Once that window closes, stop further attempts and document why testing didn’t occur.
  • Recordkeeping: Retain explanations for missed deadlines and provide them to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration upon request.

A documented attempt doesn’t replace a completed test, but it records how the employer responded. Our on-site mobile testing and program management services help Fresno employers establish procedures for reaching a collector, directing the driver, and preserving required records.
