DOT Saliva Testing in Houston

DOT Oral Fluid Testing Requires Two HHS-Certified Laboratories

Federal rules authorize oral fluid as a Department of Transportation drug-testing specimen method, but employers can’t use it yet. Implementation requires at least two laboratories certified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for oral fluid testing, a condition current federal guidance indicates hasn’t been met. Until it is, employers can’t substitute a non-DOT saliva test for a required DOT drug test.

We help Houston employers choose the correct testing path before sending an employee for collection. We first determine whether the test is DOT-regulated, which transportation agency has authority, why the test is required, and which specimen method is currently permitted.

Choose the Right Employer Testing Program

Fastest Labs Houston Galleria provides DOT testing services and employer testing support from our Houston location. We work with small businesses, transportation organizations, government agencies, and other employers on custom testing programs, policy creation, program management, and mobile employer testing.

Our certified collectors provide accurate, confidential service in a clean, comfortable facility. When you contact us about an employee test, please have the testing reason, regulated job role, requested specimen type, and designated employer representative instructions ready. These details allow us to clarify which service applies.

Before requesting a collection, confirm:

  • Regulatory category: Whether the employee and testing event fall under DOT Part 40 or a non-DOT workplace policy.
  • Testing reason: Whether the request involves pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, or follow-up testing.
  • Specimen method: Whether the applicable program currently permits an oral fluid specimen or requires another available method.
  • Program instructions: Which documentation, laboratory process, Medical Review Officer, and designated employer representative requirements apply.

DOT & Non-DOT Saliva Tests Aren’t Interchangeable

DOT oral fluid testing must follow DOT Part 40, use federal custody-and-control documentation, meet authorized specimen requirements, and undergo analysis at a laboratory certified under the applicable federal program. When federal rules permit the method, the employer or designated employer representative determines the specimen type.

Non-DOT oral fluid testing instead follows the employer’s written policy, applicable legal requirements, and the selected laboratory’s procedures. It may fit within a workplace testing program, but it doesn’t satisfy a DOT obligation simply because the collection also uses saliva.

How a DOT Oral Fluid Collection Is Designed to Work

Once federal implementation requirements are satisfied, a compliant oral fluid collection can be directly observed by a qualified collector. The process uses the applicable Federal Custody and Control Form to document the specimen from collection through laboratory receipt.

The federal collection framework includes:

  • Checking the donor’s oral cavity before collection.
  • Following the approved collection device instructions.
  • Verifying the required specimen volume.
  • Documenting the collection on the federal form.
  • Using tamper-evident handling to protect specimen integrity during shipment.
  • Sending the specimen for laboratory analysis instead of using an instant or point-of-collection drug test.

These procedures describe how DOT oral fluid testing is intended to operate. They don’t mean that appointments are currently available in Houston.
