What Our DOT Random Testing Program Covers

A compliant program requires more than random tests. Under DOT regulations, employers must administer six distinct testing types. We conduct all of them: random (unannounced), pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.

DOT drug testing uses a 5-panel urine test that screens for marijuana, cocaine, PCP, amphetamines, and opiates, including expanded opioids. Alcohol testing follows DOT protocol using an approved breath alcohol testing device. Random selections are made using a scientifically valid method, meaning employers can’t choose who gets tested.

Beyond the test itself, we also provide:
  • Drug and alcohol policy creation to meet written policy requirements
  • Ongoing random program management to help keep your pool current and your records up to date
  • Audit preparation support to help you prepare when a review happens
  • Mobile on-site testing for employers who need a certified collector at their location
  • Regulatory updates and resources to help keep your team informed as DOT rules change

Why Las Vegas Employers Choose Fastest Labs of NE Las Vegas

Speed matters in random testing. When a selection is made, the employee needs to report immediately. Delays create compliance risk. Our sub-five-minute wait times mean your drivers and safety-sensitive employees aren’t sitting around, and your operations aren’t stalled longer than necessary.

Certified collectors conduct every test with precision and full chain-of-custody documentation, and results come back fast, often instantly for initial screenings. Affordably priced and available in-lab or at your site through mobile testing, we’re the local partner Las Vegas businesses can count on.

Who Must Enroll in a DOT Random Testing Program

If your business employs safety-sensitive workers under any DOT agency, a random drug and alcohol testing program isn’t optional. All DOT-regulated employers must maintain one under 49 CFR Part 40. The agencies that require it include FMCSA, FAA, FTA, FRA, PHMSA, and the USCG.

For FMCSA-regulated carriers, a commercial motor vehicle operator is subject to these rules if the vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, carries 16 or more passengers, or transports hazardous materials requiring placarding. As of 2026, FMCSA minimum random testing rates are set at 50% of the driver pool for drugs and 10% for alcohol annually.

A few specifics worth knowing:
  • Owner-operators can’t randomly select themselves, so they must join a consortium managed by a third-party administrator (C/TPA)
  • Small fleets typically join a consortium random testing pool; larger fleets may maintain a standalone pool
  • Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA)-regulated drivers, including passenger carriers and household goods movers, must also participate in a random drug and alcohol testing program following a DOT drug-free workplace look-alike format

What a Complete Program from Fastest Labs of NE Las Vegas Includes

Enrollment in a random pool is the start, not the finish. A fully compliant DOT random testing program requires a written drug and alcohol policy, all six testing types, a Designated Employer Representative (DER), supervisor training, employee education, and year-end Management Information System (MIS) reporting. The DER is the employer-designated person authorized to remove a safety-sensitive employee from duty when a positive or refusal occurs. That role must be filled by someone inside your organization, not a service agent.

We help Las Vegas employers build and maintain programs that cover these requirements: policy drafting, random pool management, mobile and in-lab collection, and audit preparation support so your records reflect what the regulations require.
