Pre-Employment & Return-to-Duty DOT Alcohol Testing

Pre-employment DOT alcohol testing must be completed and a negative result received before a safety-sensitive employee performs any covered duties for the first time. There’s no flexibility on sequencing. The test comes before the work, not alongside it.

Return-to-duty testing occurs after an employee completes SAP-required education or treatment and is cleared to resume safety-sensitive functions. A negative result is required before they return. Follow-up testing then requires a minimum of six unannounced tests in the first 12 months, with the SAP able to direct additional testing for up to 60 months. For-Cause Breath Alcohol Testing: The Supervisor Standard

Reasonable suspicion testing isn’t discretionary. When one of those thresholds is met, the clock starts immediately. Alcohol testing should be completed within two hours. If it isn’t, the employer must document the reason. After eight hours, alcohol testing can’t be attempted, and the employer must record why the test wasn’t completed.

The driver must remain available for testing and must not consume alcohol for eight hours following the accident, or until tested, whichever comes first.
