Alabama’s Drug-Free Workplace Program

Alabama gives employers a financial reason to formalize their testing programs. Under Code of Alabama Sections 25-5-330 through 25-5-340, employers who implement a certified drug-free workplace program can qualify for a 5 percent discount on workers’ compensation insurance premiums. For businesses with meaningful payroll, that discount can add up quickly.

Certification is issued by the Workers’ Compensation Division of the Alabama Department of Labor. To qualify, your program must include a substance abuse testing component, employee assistance program provisions, employee education, and supervisor training. The premium discount applies pro rata from the date of certification and continues for up to four years, after which any discount shifts to an experience-rating basis.
