DOT Random Drug Testing in Maryville
Complete Program Creation, Implementation & Ongoing Management
Building a compliant DOT Random Drug & Alcohol Testing Program involves more than scheduling a test. Employers must design a written policy, maintain a qualified random selection pool, track testing rates, and stay current with federal requirements under 49 CFR Part 382 and 49 CFR Part 40. Errors can put your operating authority at risk. We help employers in Maryville, Tennessee, build compliant programs from the start.

Which Employers Must Run a Random Testing Program
Federal DOT regulations require employers in six safety-sensitive agencies to conduct random drug and alcohol testing: the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), and United States Coast Guard (USCG). Other CDL-holding employees, including private motor carriers and church employees, may also be subject to routine random testing requirements.
For FMCSA-regulated carriers, there are no fleet-size exemptions. If your operation involves commercial motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver), or hazmat vehicles requiring a CDL, you’re required to maintain a compliant random testing program regardless of how many drivers you employ.
How We Support Your Program
We offer certified breathalyzer tests, urinalysis, and saliva alcohol tests to cover your DOT testing needs. Collections take place in our clean, private facilities, and our certified collectors conduct each test with precision and full confidentiality. If bringing employees to us isn’t practical, we also offer on-site testing options so our team can come to your location.
Beyond the individual test, we provide policy creation, implementation, and ongoing program management. That means we work with you to build the program, not just process paperwork when a random selection comes up.
How the Random Selection Process Works
DOT random testing isn’t self-directed. FMCSA sets minimum annual testing rates at 50% of covered employees for drugs and 10% for alcohol. Selections must be unannounced and made using a scientifically valid method that gives every safety-sensitive employee an equal chance of being chosen. Testing must occur at least quarterly and be spread reasonably throughout the calendar year so no pattern can be anticipated.
Consortium Requirements for Owner-Operators
How you structure your random pool depends on how many CDL drivers you employ. An employer with more than one CDL driver subject to DOT testing may manage its own program internally. Owner-operators with only one CDL driver who aren’t leased to another motor carrier are required to place that driver in a consortium (sometimes called a C/TPA, or Consortium/Third-Party Administrator) for random testing purposes, since a pool of one can’t function as a legitimate random selection process.
If you’re unsure which structure applies to your situation, we can walk you through it.
