Genetic Reconstruction Testing in Fargo

When Direct DNA Testing Isn’t Possible, Close Relatives May Provide Answers

Genetic Reconstruction Testing can help evaluate a biological relationship when a key person can’t provide a DNA sample. We collect samples from available close relatives, and laboratory analysis compares inherited DNA patterns to help assess the relationship in question.

Families may consider this service when a possible parent is deceased, unreachable, unavailable, or unwilling to participate. Because the testing is indirect, the appropriate approach depends on which relatives are available and how they’re related to the person whose genetic profile is needed.

Call (701) 394-4971 to discuss Genetic Reconstruction Testing with our Fargo team and identify which family members may be suitable participants.

Confidential Collection by Certified DNA Collectors

We bring more than a decade of industry experience to sensitive DNA collections. Our certified collectors work in a clean facility, protect client confidentiality, and aim to keep wait times under five minutes.

We collect, label, and document the samples, while partner facilities perform the DNA analysis. Facilities that we partner with are accredited by AABB (Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies). We aren’t AABB accredited.

Which Relatives Can Participate?

The most useful participants depend on the family structure and the biological relationship being evaluated. Before collection, we can review the available relatives and discuss whether the proposed configuration is appropriate for Genetic Reconstruction Testing.

Possible participants and relationship questions include:

  • Parents: An available parent may provide genetic information relevant to the relationship being assessed.
  • Siblings: Full or half-siblings may participate in sibling relationship testing or help assess whether they share a possible parent.
  • Grandparents: One or more grandparents may participate in grandparentage testing when a possible parent is unavailable.
  • Aunts or uncles: Avuncular testing evaluates an aunt-or-uncle relationship and may be appropriate for certain family configurations.
  • Other close relatives: Additional family members may provide useful genetic information depending on the relationship in question.

What Happens During DNA Sample Collection?

We first discuss the relationship question, the available participants, and the intended use of the results. Different family configurations provide different levels of information, so this review helps us identify the appropriate collection requirements.

The collection and analysis process may include:

  • Identity verification: We confirm each participant’s identity and document the information required for the selected test.
  • Sample collection: Most relationship testing uses a non-invasive cheek swab, although the exact requirements depend on the test configuration.
  • Secure handling: We label and secure each sample using procedures designed to protect its integrity and the client’s privacy.
  • Laboratory analysis: The laboratory compares inherited DNA patterns from participating relatives to help evaluate the unavailable person’s genetic profile.

Indirect relationship testing produces a statistical analysis. Interpretation depends on the relationship being tested, the number and closeness of participating relatives, and the genetic information they share.

Personal & Official-Use DNA Testing Have Different Requirements

Tell us how you plan to use the results before collection. A confidential test for personal information may require different documentation than testing intended for court, immigration, adoption, inheritance, benefits, or another official purpose.

Official-use testing may require chain of custody. This process documents participants’ identities and tracks sample collection, labeling, transfer, and receipt from start to finish. Acceptance of an indirect DNA result isn’t automatic and depends on the court, agency, or other requesting authority. Confirm its requirements before proceeding.
